My Recipes: Turkey Chili

Go ahead and forget everything you think you know about Turkey Chili cause my version of this much maligned dish is gonna BLOW YOUR MIND! It packs a TON of flavor, spice and all around goodness. And the best part about it…IT’S HEALTHY!

Ingredients (yields 20 servings):

  • 2- 16 oz cans stewed tomatoes (best if you can find it with chiles )
  • 1 large Onion
  • 1 12 oz can Chipotle Pepper In Adobo Sauce ( you will only use (6)
  • 1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 lb Ground Turkey
  • 1 cup Peppers, Chili, Green, Canned
  • 2 Poblano Pepper, Raw
  • 2 medium raw Green-bell Pepper
  • 32 oz Tomato Sauce
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Lower In Sodium
  • 1 tsp Minced Garlic In Oil
  • 3 cans Black Beans
  • 1 tbls chili powder
  • 1 tbls Paprika
  • 1 tbls Cumin
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Brown sugar or honey (optional)
  • salt and pepper to taste.

Directions:

Prep: Dice onion, green pepper, 6 chipotle peppers and poblano pepper. Pre-heat 1 large pot (enough to hold 20 cups of water) and one large saute pan.

In saute pan on medium high heat add olive oil. Cook diced green and poblano peppers until soft. Add onions and cook till translucent. Add chipolte peppers and canned green peppers, cook 10 minutes and turn heat off. Set aside to cool. Once cool to touch, add to a blender and puree. MAJOR HINT: DO NOT PUREE WHILE HOT!!!!!! YOU’LL BE VERY SORRY. Actually its dangerous, don’t do it.

While peppers are cooking, add meat to large pot and cook. Add dry spices, garlic and tomatoes (water and all) and cook 30 minutes, stir to prevent sticking.

Combine pepper puree, tomato sauce, black beans (NOT drained) and beef broth to meat and simmer on medium low heat for 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Taste and check heat (spicy hot) and sodium level. If chili is too hot (spicy) add a tsp of brown sugar. Check again in 20 minutes. Repeat this until desired heat level. Add salt to taste but try to avoid adding too much.

hint: To reduce heat, add less chipotles or green chiles.

Take the beans out of this recipe and you could use it for a “non fun” dinner night

Me and Mrs. EET never saw more weight loss than when we took carb items out of “healthy dishes” like this for dinner — beans out of chili, potatoes out of stews, etc.

And they still tasted GREAT — we’ll try your recipe–got some nice spices in there we haven’t used!

Be sure to double or triple your water consumption with this dish though–high sodium–not a problem but you want to flush that sodium through as soon as possible.

    Great stuff!

    talk to you soon.

    • Agreed. I add the Black beans for added fiber and protein. Without them the meal is very low in fiber. I also like beans in my chili and its by far the best option. I have learned that eating this meal for lunch is best. Its just too heavy for a dinner.

Try it and tell me what you think.

  2. 110. Forget all this strategy/technique stuff, the srecet is to just eat a half of a banana. 7 Minutes in Heaven. No seriously, this was horrible. But, don’t underestimate the keep falling to the floor, keep moving advice. The one time I stopped, it didn’t help at all, just made me feel light headed and dizzy and made it harder to get going again. My money’s still on Josh, if he gives it another go. And Waller, of course.
