Almost 500 years ago a man named Ponce De Leon went on a life long search for the mysterious Fountain of Youth. He died in 1521 never finding that elusive Fountain. And much like Ponce de León, many people today are in search of magic to shed unwanted fat.
Whether it be a pill, liposuction, Gastric Bypass or the relatively new Lapband, they all offer the same promise….a quick fix. The problem with these weight loss methods isn’t that they don’t work. In fact, many lead to major weight loss. The issue is that they don’t promote long-term or sustained weight loss. I found this in a People magazine article:
Gastric surgery—operations that dramatically alter the digestive system, limiting how much food a person can consume or absorb—has become a $3.6 billion industry with an estimated 400 Americans a day going under the knife this year. For many who struggle with their weight, it seems a miracle cure. But surgery isn’t a quick, easy or even permanent fix. “It’s a jump start,” says Dr. James Ostroff of UC San Francisco Medical Center. Patients may lose up to 50 percent of their pre-op weight, but then, estimates Anchorage surgeon John Snyder, about 20 percent will regain a significant amount.
The numbers are similar for the ephedrine pill, lapband surgery and even Liposuction. Sure people lose weight, but a good portion gain it back and then some. It doesn’t teach you how to lose weight or even tell you what to eat. Ephedrine reduces your appetite so you can’t eat and has actually led to peoples death…Surgerys take away part of your stomach so you CAN’T eat! This doesn’t promote long-term health. It’s nothing more than a quick fix that can cost up to $25,000. So if someone loses say…150 lbs (which is a lot btw) they are spending $166.66 for each pound lost..Not a very good ratio IMO.
Wanna be proud of the way you look? How about inspiring others around you to get in shape just by being you? Want to see your kids live long, happy lives? Live till you’re 50? 40? 30? Then get up off your fat butt and do something!
It’s time for YOU to take responsibility on how YOU got to YOUR current over weight self. Stop blaming it on genetics, your spouse or anything else. YOU ate that double quarter pounder, large fries and extra-large coke. YOU hate that whole box of Fruity Loops. YOU watched T.V. for 5 hours after work instead of going on a 30 minute walk. YOU ordered the fried chicken. YOU! YOU! YOU! YOU! YOU!
Getting healthy is the best thing YOU can do for YOURself. So what are you waiting for? Cause the magic fat fairy ain’t real…Only YOU can change YOUR life.
How does that old saying go?
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you’ll feed him for a life-time.
